SERIAN: The release of 100,000 fish fry during a freshwater fish farming project at Kampung Riih Daso will increase the socio-economy of the local community.

The state government through the Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA) Samarahan has approved an allocation of RM280,000 for the project.

“I hope such a community project will be successful and will bring benefit to everyone in terms of improving their socioeconomy,” said Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus.

“I also believe any agricultural activity that can generate income must be appreciated as it will subsequently develop the livelihood of the community as a whole,” he said after officiating at the event yesterday.

At the same time, Bukit Semuja Youth chief Norman Barker said the project started in 2017 before receiving the funds from IADA the following year.

“This project marks another milestone as the state government offers assistance and support to the rural community in implementing and developing this fish farming project on their own.

“In four to five months, we might be able to harvest the produce before starting a new season of fish farming,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.

He also said locals had shown interest in the project as they themselves came up with the idea to upgrade the nearby facility — a jetty.

“The locals built a jetty made of bamboo near the project area, showing their eagerness in taking part in the project,” he added.

Also present at the event was Samarahan IADA director Medan Insol and Serian District Council secretary Constantine Gerald David Jonas.
