150 underprivileged families receive protection insurance certs

MIRI: One hundred and fifty underprivileged families have received their Protection Insurance Certificates (PIC) from the director of the State Development Department (SDC) Sarawak ICU, Prime Minister’s Office, Jasni Jubli here yesterday.

The recipients were registered in the eKasih system during the Community’s Welfare Insurance Scheme programme’s roadshow here.

In a press statement from the Implementation Processing Unit in the Prime Minister’s Office here yesterday, a spokesperson said the programme was organised in collaboration with the Unit, ICU JPM and Prudential BSN Takaful Berhad (PruBSN).

She said PIC provides free insurance coverage to the eligible underprivileged families and was implemented on Sept 1 last year after being approved during the Malaysian Social Protection Committee Conference (MySPC) on March 23 last year.

Some 268,887 underprivileged people, aged between 19 to 60 years, are covered in the PIC programme with a cost of RM13.4 million.

She added that under the scheme, the next of kin benefitted from RM10,000 compensation for deaths due to natural causes or RM25,000 for deaths due to accidents while those who suffered permanent disability are eligible to receive RM10,000 compensation.

She said the government is committed in carrying out the programme in eradicating poverty towards the year 2025 besides providing a higher standard of living to the people.

The roadshow was the first to be held here.
