KUCHING: The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) has recorded a total of 168 cases of open burning throughout the state from January to April 17 this year.

Its director Datuk Khirudin Drahman said the highest count of 92 cases involved bush, weed, and grass fires.

“Garbage waste accounted for 61 cases, while forest fires made up eight cases.

“Plantations, farms, and timber recorded three cases each, and peat fire, one case,” he said.

The zones that recorded the highest number of open burning cases this year, is Zone 6 Miri with 54 cases, followed by Zone 4 Sibu (35), Zone 1 Kuching (32), Zone 5 Bintulu (28), Zone 2 Samarahan (12), Zone 7 Limbang (four), and Zone 3 Sri Aman (three).

In view of the hot and dry weather that has brought in hazy conditions in the state, Khirudin stressed the need for caution and protection measures during open burning or slash-and-burn methods used in land clearing for farming.

If it is not done carefully, open burning may pose a danger to the health of the community.

“It is high time that we reminded the community to be extra cautious in conducting any open burning activities.

“We hope that all burning activities are carried out with precaution and protection measures to avoid fires,” he said.

Khirudin assured that his department and other relevant agencies will be monitoring the situation closely to prevent any further open burning cases.

The public should report any suspected cases of open burning to the authorities immediately.

Open burning contributes to air pollution and can cause haze which is linked to various respiratory illnesses.
