KUCHING: About 1,700 face masks and eight bottles of hand sanitisers were distributed to students and staff members of Chung Hua Primary School No. 3 yesterday.

The hand sanitisers will be placed in areas frequented by the school’s students and staff members.

Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii who presented the items said that the initiative aimed to spread awareness and education to the students and teachers on the methods of prevention not just against the Wuhan coronavirus (2019-nCov), but other influenza viruses as well.

“Even if it wasn’t for the spread of 2019-nCoV, it is important to know this (prevention knowledge) for the common flu or influenza which is also surging through our country right now,” he said.

He also mentioned that there was a lot of confusion among the public on what mask to wear and how to wear it.

“We can give a lot of masks but if the people do not know how to wear it properly, it is counterproductive and not useful,” he said to reporters at the event.

Kelvin said based on WHO’s recommendation, the coloured side of the mask must be visible with the light-coloured side turned towards the wearer’s face.

Dr Yii also mentioned that he along with Padungan assemblyman Wong King Wei and Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong have started the initiative (of distributing face masks) before the Chinese New Year celebration.

Also present were Wong, Kuching Chung Hua Primary School No. 1 to 6 Committee of Management presidents Wong Tiong Hock, and Kuching Chung Hua Primary Schools No. 1 to 6 management board secretary general Rodger Chan.
