21 evacuation centres closed

KUCHING: Twenty-one temporary flood evacuation centres have been closed following good weather conditions the past few days.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said as of 5pm today, only 22 evacuation centres remained open in three divisions — Kuching, Serian and Miri.

Meanwhile, the number of flood victims decreased to 2,414 as compared to 3,780 at 12pm today. There are currently 639 families at the evacuation centres.

In Kuching, there are 11 evacuation centres and 1,328 victims from 323 families are seeking temporary shelter there following the recent flood disaster.

The centres are SK Matu Baru, Batu Kawa 38 Commercial Centre, SRB Chung Hua Sejijak, Dewan Batu Kitang Jaya, Dewan Masyarakat Haji Kamaruddin Segedup, Batu Kawa Min Lit secondary school, SMK Batu Kawa, SJK Chung Hua Batu Kawa, Dewan Masyarakat Pinang Jaya, Surau Ar Rahman, and Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Tupong Tengah.

Meanwhile in Serian, some 1,079 victims from 315 families are currently placed in 10 evacuation centres — Serian Community Hall, Dewan Kampung Betong Kanowit, Dewan Kampung Lintang Baru, Dewan Baru Siniawan Jepon, Kampung Soh St Peter’s Church, SK Tanah Merah, Surau Al-Hadhari Kampung Rimba Padi, SK Tanah Puteh, Dewan Kampung Slabi Entukuh, and Dewan Balek Buk Janjun.
