KUCHING: A total of 315 summonses were issued by the State Road Transport Department (JPJ) in 14 operations statewide in conjunction with the National Day Special Operations on Thursday night. According to State JPJ director Mohd Syafiq Anas Abdullah, when met at one of the operations in Batu Kawa here, a lot of vehicles especially motorcycles and cars were on the road on the eve of National Day. “We give special attention to offences that we always find on the road.

“As of 9pm, 172 summonses have been issued here,” he said, adding that among the offences commonly committed were no driving licence, expired road tax, modified motorcycle and fancy plate numbers.

He pointed out that Sarawak recorded the highest number of drivers on the road without driving licence. “There are several factors that caused them to drive without licence.

“Firstly, they have licence but they choose not to renew their expired driving licence.

“Secondly, most of them still do not own a driving licence especially among the youths that ride the motorcycle. It may be due to the high rate of owning a motorcycle licence which makes them feel hard to go for driving test,” he explained.

Among the 14 JPJ branches that were involved in the operation were Kuching, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Limbang, Lawas, SPK Serian, SPK Stapan and SPK Skaloh.

The operation in Batu Kawa started at 8pm until 12 midnight while other branches from 10pm until 4am the next morning.
