67 groups join mechanical project exhibition

KUCHING: The Mechanical Project Exhibition (MPEx) 2023, themed “Innovation Towards Sustainable,” concluded with the outstanding victory of the “Fabrication of Portable Sand Blasting Chamber,” surpassing 66 other competing groups.

The event, organised by Politeknik Kuching Sarawak (PKS) last Tuesday, witnessed the participation of 67 groups, involving 241 students from various Diploma programmes such as Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing, Automotive, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration.

The winners, who were members of the Mechanical Engineering Diploma programme (Automotive) not only secured the winner’s trophy but also earned a noteworthy cash prize of RM250 and a certificate of appreciation.

Employing the Industry 4.0 approach, the MPEx programme aimed to harness the capabilities and skills of students in executing projects based on design, development, and management principles.

A lecturer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at PKS, Dasima Shahinan stressed the competition’s significance in promoting innovation with a focus on environmental sustainability, which is a pivotal element in economic and global development.

Meanwhile, senior manager of Regulatory and Permitting at Sarawak Energy Berhad, Azuan Abu Talib representing the industry judging panel, underscored the crucial role of encouraging students to channel their ideas towards innovation.

He highlighted the importance of ingraining sustainability in education and technology into every student at PKS.

These students, currently in their fifth semester of Mechanical Engineering, will further their studies through a six-month industrial training programme in companies related to their respective fields.
