75 collared in 27 raids

Dev Kumar is not letting his guards down where illegal gambling activities is concerned. From New Year’s Day until last Sunday, Sarawak CID units conducted 27 successful gambling raids which resulted in the arrest of 75 individuals.

Dev said of 27 raids, 10 raids were conducted at convenience stores and coffee shops offering online gambling reload services. The raids were conducted by teams from CID HQs and district CIDs. Five raids were conducted by CID HQs while four each were conducted by CID Kuching, Miri and Padawan.

Two raids each were conducted by CID Sibu and Limbang while one raid each was conducted by CID Bintulu, Sri Aman, Sarikei, Kota Samarahan, Bau and Mukah.

He said police will concentrate on 24-hour convenience stores and coffee shops offering reload services to online gamblers to put a stop to the illegal gambling activity.

Ten raids were conducted in six districts (Kuching, Padawan, Miri, Bintulu, Sri Aman and Limbang) which resulted in the arrest of 21 service providers and gamblers and seizure of 17 tablets, mobile phones and cash amounting to RM3,934. Sixteen raids were conducted at counters selling illegal 4D in nine districts.

The raids resulted in the arrest of 17 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM5,789. Mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationery were also seized. The biggest raid was conducted at a cock-fighting pit in Batu Niah, Miri. On 1 Jan at 2pm, a team from CID HQs led by ASP Lim Jaw Shyong conducted a raid in an open area at Hulu Suai, Niah, Miri. Thirty-seven gamblers were arrested for getting involved in a cock-fighting activity in a makeshift tent.

Live and dead cockerels and gambling paraphernalia related to cock-fighting were also seized. Of the 75 arrested, 68 were males while the rest were females.

They were aged between 17 and 62 years. Eight of the arrestees were foreigners. A ll the arrestees are being investigated for offences under the Common Gaming House Act, 1953 and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance, 1962.
