SIBU: The Al-Qadim Islamic Cemetery here witnessed an extraordinary gathering of 800 volunteers who came together for the annual Gotong-Royong Bersih Kubur programme, an initiative organised by the Sibu Muslim Welfare Trust Board (LAKIS) yesterday (Mar 10).

This event was in collaboration with the Jawatankuasa Tetap Perayaan Islam Sibu, the Sibu Resident’s Office, and the Nangka State Assembly Service Centre.

“We are humbled by the participation of over 100 agencies, numerous NGOs, and local Muslim community in this endeavour to clean the Al-Qadim cemetery,” said Sibu Islamic Cemetery manager Effendy Abdul Aziz.

Among the government agencies that joined were the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), the Civil Defence Department (JPAM), and the Sibu Islamic Religious Department (JAIS), to name a few.

The event not only aimed at cleaning the cemetery but also at strengthening social bonds within the Muslim community.

“It’s about more than just cleaning; it’s about fostering unity and continuing the tradition of caring for our cemetery,” he added.
