Man arrested for drug possession

KUCHING: Police have arrested a local man on suspicion of possessing drugs around Eden Heights apartment last Saturday night (June 20).

Kuching District deputy police chief, Supt Merbin Lisa, who confirmed this, said the arrest was carried out by a team from Kuching Police Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) at 11pm around Richmond Hill.

“The team searched the man and found drugs suspected to be syabu weighing 5.28g with a street value of RM790.

“The man, who had previous criminal records involving substance abuse, tested positive for methamphetamine,” he said in a statement.

Merbin said the man was currently remanded until June 25 to facilitate investigations under Section 39A (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

If convicted, the offender could be sentenced to a jail term of not less than two years and not more than five years, and whippings of not less than three strokes and not more than nine strokes.

He stated that cooperation between police and the public was vital in eradicating drug abuse.

He urged the public to provide information on drug trafficking in their respective areas to enable the police to take immediate actions.
