MIRI: An elderly man ended up poorer by RM226,450 after the victim was duped by a Macau Scam syndicate.

He lost the money after being told that a package containing his photo, credit card and identification card was being used for scamming purposes.

Miri district police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah who confirmed the case said the incident happened two weeks ago when the 61-year-old complainant received two phone calls from two suspects.

According to the complainant, the suspects introduced themselves as ‘Sergeant Yap’ from Kuantan police and ‘Wong’ from Pos Laju Kuala Lumpur.

“The complainant was told that a package, sent from Kota Kinabalu to Kuantan, Pahang, was received by Pos Laju Kuala Lumpur. The package contained a photo of the complainant, his credit card and identification card, which were believed to have been used to scam unsuspecting victims.

“Believing the suspects, he made six transactions totalling RM226,450 to third party bank accounts given by the suspects to facilitate investigations,” Lim said in a statement.
