KUCHING: The family of a man who died of Covid-19 has received a cheque for RM2,000 and other benefits from the Social Security Organisation (Socso).

The cheque was presented by Sibu Division Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) coordinator Dr Annuar Rapaee, on behalf of Sibu Socso, to Zainon Haron, the mother of the late Syahrizan Sabri, at the latter’s residence in Jalan Abang Barieng here on Tuesday (March 23).

Sibu Socso manager Tan Phang Chia said they, through the Socso Caring Squad, immediately tracked down the beneficiaries.

“In this case, the immediate family of the deceased is eligible to receive assistance under the Disability Scheme, which includes funeral assistance amounting to RM2,000 and pension benefits.”

Tan added that the late Syahrizan was a contributor under the Employees Social Security Act 1969 (Act 4) and the Self-Employment Insurance Scheme Act (Act 800).

He explained that contributors were eligible to receive benefits in the event of an accident, disability and death due to illness and loss of employment.

“Contributors and recipients can come to the Socso office to check their eligibility and then receive the relevant benefits.”

Tan explained that the immediate family of the deceased was his mother because the deceased was single.

“Syahrizan’s mother will receive the retirement pension for life. This assistance will help ease the burden of heirs or dependents.”
