SIBU: Students must strive harder in their studies and excel in mathematics and science subjects because these two subjects are vital in the engineering field.

Utilities Ministry Permanent Secretary Datuk Alice Jawan gave this advice at a luncheon which she hosted for nine teachers and 59 students of SMK Ulu Balingian, Mukah at Penview Hotel in Kuching, yesterday.

Alice, who is one of the most successful and well-educated Dayak women, stressed that women’s involvement in engineering is not uncommon as there are many successful women engineers.

The gathering which was also attended by officers from the ministry was held to enhance closer relationship and networking with the teachers and students of the school and to encourage the students to do well in their studies.

“Nothing is impossible as long as one is dedicated to what he wants to achieve in future,” she said.

School principal Irie Ambau in his speech said that he was blessed to be given the opportunity to allow the students to meet Alice in person so that they can hear her success stories.

He also thanked Alice for hosting the gathering and hoped that such gathering or visit could be done regularly not only with SMK Ulu Balingian but also with other schools to encourage the students to excel in their studies using Alice as an icon.

The students are expected to visit the State Legislative Assembly building at Petra Jaya after the lunch gathering before returning to Mukah today (Wednesday).
