Accountant loses over RM48k in scam

SIBU: A 30-year-old accountant here lost RM48,445 after her friend tricked her into paying for furniture that she was interested in getting.

Acting Sibu OCPD Supt Dr Collin Babat said the woman happened to meet her friend at Jalan Merdeka on Feb 24.

“The suspect had told the victim that she was interested in purchasing furniture from a shop, that had put out an advertisement on Facebook.

“She then asked the victim to help pay for the goods for her first. Without feeling suspicious, the victim downloaded the shop’s application on her phone, registered her name and paid a RM10 registration fee.

“After that, the victim was requested to key in her banking details in the application and filled her saving account and credit cards from three different banks,” he said.

Collin pointed out that at 6.15pm that day, the victim received messages from the banks regarding several transactions amounting to RM48,445, had been transferred into different bank accounts.

The victim promptly lodged a police report for further action under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
