KUCHING: The Al Malik mosque at Taman Uni Garden, Kota Samarahan is finally open to devotees in the area.

The mosque which cost over RM3 million was officially opened by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg after performing the Friday prayers today.

With 660 square metres, the mosque is able to accommodate 564 congregations at a time and provide 30 car park spaces and 31 motorcycle parking spaces.

For the record, the golden dome of the mosque was inspired by the struggle of the Palestinian people who are always fighting for the liberation of the Al Aqsa Mosque from the Zionist-Israeli.

Meanwhile, the mihrab is made of teak wood incorporating Islamic carvings. It contains an engraving of verse 37 of Surah Ali Imran on the top of the mihrab and Kalimah Tawhid on the right and left pillars of the mihrab.

The interior of the Al Malik Mosque is decorated with calligraphic mural paintings where it contains verses and surahs in the Quran, 20 attributes as well as Islamic art patterns painted on the inside of the dome.

The mosque took 18 months to be completed and was handed over to the Department of Islamic Religion, Samarahan Division on Dec 28, 2022.

According to the statement, as the new mosque is still unable to accommodate the growing number of congregations in the area, its committee is planning the construction of phase 2 of the mosque.

“This is to increase the prayer spaces, build a mosque tower, funeral room, classroom, and meeting room.

“InsyaAllah, Phase 2 will begin as soon as its defects liability period (DLP) expires in Dec this year.”
