Anti-rabbies vaccination uses 4,000 vaccine doses

KUCHING: Veterinary Department provided 4,000 vaccine doses during a mass anti-rabies vaccination at Bau Civic Centre, near here yesterday.

According to Dr. Nicholas Jenek from Veterinary Department, the opened six counters during the one-day programme for the public to get their dogs for free vaccination.

“One bottle is enough for 10 dogs; today six teams were deployed with each having 500 doses that can cater for 3,000 dogs, and we also bring extra 1,000 doses for backup,” said Nicholas when speaking to reporters.

He added, the vaccinated dogs must be kept in the house compound for at least a minimum of 14-days and better if they can be kept there for 28 days.

“Dogs from overseas are quarantine for six-months, this is because of rabies incubation period can take up to six-months.

“Pet lovers should bring their pets to the vet for vaccination, neuter, deworming and tick free,” he reminded.

Meanwhile, Nicholas said that, stray dogs which are caught by the councils and handed to veterinary department will be put to sleep.

“Yes this is the procedure. They will not be vaccinated, monitored or tested for rabies; this is due to the complaints of the public,” he disclosed.
