KUCHING: Sarawakians have huge potential to excel in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Malaysian astronaut Datuk Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha said that students in Sarawak are smart and they seem very interested in the STEM subjects.

“I have incredible hopes for them (Sarawakian students) because I know they are intelligent.

“They have great foundations in the English language medium, being able to speak well, confident and are able to think outside the box.

“Definitely, they have the quality in them and we just need to continue to encourage them in education, and help them to believe in themselves. Therefore, nothing is impossible”, he said.

He told this to reporters after the closing ceremony of MySTEM innovations Challenge at Yayasan Sarawak International Secondary School (YSISS), Jalan Casuarina, Petra Jaya.

He added that, he is thrilled to be in Sarawak with STEM Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) to meet with the students here in the Land of the Hornbills.

“Our goal is to develop future generations from the STEM industry and this does not necessarily need to be an astronaut but we do want to see more doctors, scientists and more from the science industry,” he explained.

When asked about the future of the field of astronauts, he said he was not sure of its future.

“However, I continue to share my experiences with the students in order for them to be dedicated, excited and even more positive by becoming a successful student.

“I would like to congratulate Sarawak for organising progammes such as these and involving school students. I pray that this state to continue producing bright and successful students for its future,” he said.

He also shared about his experiences in space and was one of the juries in the ‘3 Minutes Pitching’ competition.
