KUCHING: A total of 450 high quality cattle imported from Australia are ready for sale in an auction for the upcoming Hari Raya Korban celebration

Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Martin Ben said that the cattle sold were in the weight category of 500kg to 600kg with an attractive price.

The breeds of cattle, namely Brahman, Angus, Limousin, and Simmental were sold at the Cattle Bidding Day at Siburan Halal Abbatoir Complex, near here today.

Martin officiated at the inaugural event, which was organised by the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) and the Department Veterinary Services (DVS) Sarawak.

“The total number of cattle in the large category is 450 divided into three groups according to size.

“So, bidders have the opportunity to see and choose the cattle from the stables provided in the abattoir complex,” he said when speaking at the opening ceremony of the Cattle Bidding Day.

According to him, this auction allowed sellers and buyers to meet while promoting the advantages of Sarawak’s ruminant livestock that could be exported anywhere.

The efforts implemented by PPES Ternak, a subsidiary of SEDC, as a leader in the development of the cattle industry in Sarawak are in line with the inspiration of the ministry.

Meanwhile, DVS Sarawak director Dr Adrian Susin Ambud confirmed the supply of cattle ahead of Hari Raya Korban in Sarawak has now reached 1,500 to 2,000 requests.

However, he said the supply of cattle is sufficient with more than 1,000 cattle imported from Australia already in the PPES livestock.

“Sixty per cent of it has already been sold so we still have 40 per cent of which the breed that sells best and gets orders is the Brahman Cross,” he said.

Also present at the ceremony was SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr Abdul Aziz Husain.
