KAPIT: The Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari is set for a rebranding that aims to not only focus on cultural elements, the environment and adventures but also to create opportunities for socioeconomic growth for residents in the longhouses and surrounding areas.

Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan stressed the need to commercialise the event, enabling local communities to generate revenue and benefit from its activities.

“In the past, the event centered around cultural and environmental aspects. Now, we must adapt it to suit the socioeconomic needs of the residents,” stated Lidam at the 26th edition of the event here.

“We should provide the residents with a platform to promote and sell their products, boosting their income and overall economy. By doing so, we not only promote Song but also empower its people.”

The event was officiated by Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi and graced by Deputy Minister in Premier’s Department (Law and Native Custom) Jefferson Jamit Unyat, along with department chiefs, community chiefs and tribal leaders from throughout Song.

Lidam suggested that the organisers consider a special name for the event if it is to be held in Song in the future. He also proposed holding the event annually to ensure lasting socioeconomic impacts on the residents of Song and Katibas.

The 26th edition made history by being held in Song and extending all the way to Tekalit River in Katibas. The event, which took place from July 13 to 15, featured various activities, including speed boat competitions, cultural events, sales carnivals, and more.
