SIBU: The Bawang Assan constituency will continue to be developed by the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government, even though it is currently under the opposition.

Romeo Christopher Tegong, political secretary to the chief minister, said the people of the area were now at a disadvantage because their representatives were not from GPS.

“However, Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg is so concerned about the issue and he has allocated some funds for us here.

“He does not want the Bawang Assan constituency to be neglected and excluded from the current development,” he said during a GPS-PBB programme at Rumah Maling Banta, Sungai Aup here yesterday.

Romeo said he had been entrusted by Abang Johari to distribute funds to every longhouse in the Bawang Assan constituency.

“I will ensure that the Bawang Assan constituency continues to enjoy continuous development like other areas under GPS,” he added.

He stressed that rural areas still needed development and government aid to improve the quality of life there.

Romeo said he had previously visited several areas under the Bawang Assan constituency including Sungai Pinang, Tutus, Bungan Besar-Kecil, Rassau, Sungai Aup and other areas.

At the programme, Romeo presented funds from the state government to Rumah Maling, Rumah Juing, Pasir Mas (RM3,000), Rumah Francis, Sungai Aup (RM10,000), Rumah Catherine Tamoh, Sungai Aup (RM6,500) and SK Sungai Aup Parent-Teacher Association (RM5,000).

He also presented PBB memberships to new members, and also presented the GPS flag to the longhouse chiefs around Sungai Aup.
