Eelected representatives must be more proactive and set leadership examples in their efforts to bring about better social, economic and political developments for the people.

Former Samariang assemblywoman Datuk Paduka Sharifah Mordiah Fauzi said ties between the people and party members must be balanced so that the state could move forward.

She expressed confidence that the party would continue to lead Sarawak into the right direction into the future for the people’s sake.

“As PBB forms the government of the day (with the other coalition partners), it needs to be attentive and thorough in its responsibilities.
“It is important to follow the general principles and traditions as leaders because that way we can lead Sarawakians into the right direction,” she said.

Stressing that leaders must always be people-oriented, Sharifah Mordiah said this was for the sake of development that would benefit the people and state.

“At the same time, leaders and people must be in harmony and share the same views on development. After all, development is for the people and bears testimonies to the leaders’ duties and responsibilities to the rakyat,” she said.

The former PBB Women chief urged leaders to actively be seen on the ground with the people.

Leaders, she said, also acted as information officers by disseminating information and giving explanations to the people so that they would understand the government’s policies and strategies.

“Leaders need to have good knowledge and be with the people to explain the government’s agenda.

“The people must be aware of the development plans, what is going to happen and what has been achieved by the government, especially the elected representatives,” she said.

Describing the passion to lead as important in a leader, she said leaders must be passionate and committed.

“We must have the passion to lead because if we are not passionate as a leader, then it would be a waste of time,” she added.

Having retired from active politics in 2006, Sharifah Mordiah said she was pleased to note that PBB remained the backbone of Sarawak politics and Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) state government.

She said she was proud that the state government continued to take good care of Sarawak as well as unite the party members.

She expressed her confidence that PBB president and GPS chairman Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg would continue to strengthen unity and harmony among members in the party and its components.

Sharifah Mordiah also urged party members to continue to give full support to Abang Johari in maintaining political stability and improving the state’s economy.
