KUCHING: Sarawak has once again made its way into the Malaysia Book of Records – this time – for the longest non-stop live broadcast of ‘bermukun’ performance through the ‘Juh Bermukun 76 Jam Tanpa Henti’ 2022 programme.

The event was held in conjunction with Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM’s) 76th anniversary celebration this year and was a joint initiative with the Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Ministry.

It was held between 5.07pm on May 27 until 9.07pm on Sunday night (May 30) and featured 76 performers from Kuching, Samarahan, Mukah, Miri and Bintulu as well as Sabah and Labuan.

Speaking on behalf of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Deputy Energy and Environmental Sustainability Minister Dr Hazland Abang Hipni said the state government fully supported efforts to preserve and uphold the mukun heritage.

“To date, the Bermukun event is still the craze of young people, such was the case in the past. Because of that, I fully support and encourage the state to maintain and preserve our cultural inheritance and treasures. These are the legacies of our ancestors,” he said.

The certificates were signed by Hazland and witnessed by MBOR senior record consultant Edwin Yeoh during the closing ceremony held at RTM Kuching’s P Ramlee auditorium.

The certificates were then presented to a representative of the Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Ministry Nasir Lariwoo.

Hazland stressed that the Sarawak government would continue to strengthen the cultural arts sector through various initiatives.

“The existence of the Sarawak Arts Council (MSS), for example, is proof that the state government is serious in upholding and dignifying our arts, culture and heritage. It is proven that arts can shape culture and give birth to a society that lives in harmony.

“Therefore, I call on all relevant agencies such as the Sarawak Arts Council,
non-governmental organisations (NGOs), learning institutions, and the entire community to support the government’s aspirations so that aspects of arts, culture and national heritage continue to be preserved.”

Sarawak Broadcasting director Nasrul Hakim Md Noh in his speech, thanked the state government for its endless support towards RTM in organising the momentous event.
