BINTULU: Bintulu Division needs a second hospital due to the increase in population and economic activities in the city.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said that the existing hospital was not suitable for expansion due to the land and topography factors.

Dr Sim, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, explained that the Bintulu Hospital had discussed a suitable site with the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) and the Land and Survey Department.

“We really need a second hospital in Bintulu, especially after we faced the COVID-19 pandemic two years ago.

“At that time, all services were almost down and the hospital had to be used entirely as a COVID-19 hospital,” he said.

Dr Sim said this during the launch of the Cardiopulmonary Assessment Suite at Bintulu Hospital  recently.

He also said that the Sarawak government was  committed to realising the construction of the second hospital involved even though it was the responsibility of the Federal government.

In the meantime, he assured that the government would also strive to obtain the health autonomy enshrined in the rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).
