KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg symbolically launched 42 Digital Community Centres (DCCs) virtually today in conjunction with the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) held on Oct 7 and 8 at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching here.

At the same time yesterday several elected representatives also successfully carried out the launches physically at the DCC in their respective constituencies.

Among them were Tupong assemblyman Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman at DCC of Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Community Library at Kampung Pinang Jawa, Sadong Jaya assemblyman Aidel Lariwoo at DCC of Kampung Semera Library, and Beting Maro assemblyman Razaili Gapor at DCC of the library at Kampung Spinang in Betong.

Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee also did it at DCC of Dewan Masyarakat Teku Library in Sibu, as well as both Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat and Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni at DCC of Bakam Bureau Activity Centre in Miri.

The Sarawak State Library (Pustaka) has welcomed the intention of the state government to take advantage of the digital economy and it was entrusted to be the coordinator for 42 community centres under the DCC project with the f facilities such as Broadband Internet service; Laptop and tablet equipment; Digital video conference equipment;

Makerspace equipment, including 3D printers, 3D pens, and microcomputers as well as nline collection of books and digital information.

These DCCs will be managed by two staff members under the supervision of Pustaka and the Ministry of Local Government and Housing.

DCCs implemented this year are pilot projects and subsequent planning is subject to the results of study based on the effectiveness of the pilot project later.

The main goal of the DCCs is to strengthen the skills and capabilities of sustainable community talent, so as not to be left behind in Sarawak’s digital economy transformation.

The DCCs are expected to be able to build a sustainable digital community that is able to operate independently. The project will also be considered as a development project in the 12th Malaysia Plan so that more Sarawakians will be able to benefit from it.
