MIRI: Pork sellers operating at the central market here will be allowed to do business during Christmas Eve (Dec 24).

Miri City Council (MCC) mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said the sellers were initially told to stop trading throughout the market’s renovation beginning on Dec 21 until Jan 21.

“We have discussed with the pork stall operators the importance and safety of shutting down the whole market during the upgrading works so that the contractors can carry out their works unhindered.

“Upon request by the pork stall operators, the council agreed to allow them to trade on Dec 24 as business is traditionally good on Christmas eve,” he said in a statement today.

He said the decision was made during a recent site inspection at the central market.

“The objective of the site inspection is to see the progress of the upgrading project at the central market.”

Yii added that upon discussion with MCC site supervisor and contractor, the council will be considering a few more additional works to be done such as lightings.
