KUCHING: The Gifted Art Exhibition celebrates the diverse abilities of the special needs population and encourages inclusion in the society.

The art exhibition organised by the Kuching Association for Talent Development and Welfare of Special Needs (KATSN) is in collaboration with Lions Club and Kuching Divine Will Society.

According to Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, the art exhibition showcases the artistic talents of special needs persons.

She said the art exhibition aimed to encourage new artists.

“One of the goals of KATSN is to improve the abilities and skills of special needs children with artistic talents.

“Each child who successfully presents an artwork is given a chance to engage in entrepreneurial activities to build up his or her sense of self-worth and improve his or her capability to work in a team.

“Portraying a sense of ‘I’ve got talent’ and ‘I can do it’ can set a good example to motivate other special needs persons to use their gifts and talents,” she said.

The minister said this when officiating at the Gifted Art Exhibition ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening at Plaza Merdeka today (Sept 8).

Fatimah pointed out that many persons with special needs were often unable to express their feelings, but through art they could do so freely.

She said those who had problems with speech, language, and motor skills often struggled with verbalising what they felt and needed.

This could be frustrating to them as well as challenging to their parents and educators.

“Fortunately, art enhances cognitive and physical development, strengthens problem-solving and critical skills, develops a sense of goal setting and nurtures social skills.

“This is why art is crucial for persons with special needs,” she said.

Fatimah lauded KATSN on the art exhibition which showcased the talents of special needs persons and made the public aware of what they could do.

She said KATSN advocated the ‘DIY’ philosophy for the art exhibition.

Parents are in charge of their special needs children’s displays and prepare the easels themselves. They set up the booths as well as print their own price tags and information labels.

“Special bonding is formed as parents work alongside their special needs children which is crucial in nurturing connection and affection.

“With the help of the community and their parents, these special needs persons are capable of developing their talents and supporting themselves.

“Without a doubt, the Gifted Art Exhibition raises awareness on the importance of treating special needs persons with dignity,” added Fatimah.
