SPAOH: Approximately 200 graves, centuries-old, in the Seruai Muslim Cemetery here will be relocated to a safer area soon. Lembaga Amanah Khairat Islam Spaoh (Lakis) chairman Dr Abang Ismail Abang Julhi said the relocation would be carried out after a meeting with 60 beneficiaries.

“About 200 graves have been identified. Excavation and evacuation works need to be done as soon as possible before erosion destroys the cemetery.

“The beneficiaries will also be briefed on the digging and relocating process by the state mufti office,” he told reporters on Thursday.

The decision to relocate came after a meeting between Saribas assemblyman Mohammad Razi Sitam with the state Islamic Religious Department (Jais) and Lakis last May.

Razi had also suggested building a wall to prevent more erosion. In June last year, Lakis met with a number of government agencies with a view to expediting the redevelopment of a newly approved burial site at Lot 999 Block 9, Paku Land District.
