Claiming trial in disposing of stolen property charges

KUCHING: A civil servant was arraigned in the Magistrate’s Court on seven charges of disposing of stolen property, namely nine units of tablets belonging to the state government by allegedly selling them to four different people.

Accused Izzad, 31, who works as an assistant engineer, pleaded not guilty to four charges read out before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi, yesterday.

According to the four charges, he was charged with disposing of stolen property under Section 414 of the Penal Code involving the sale of six units of tablets to a 51-year-old man.

He committed all the offences on March 29, March 31, April 28 and May 31 at a house in Kampung Tanjung Bundong, Kota Samarahan.

The section provides for imprisonment for up to seven years or a fine or both upon conviction.

The court then allowed the accused bail of RM5,000 with a local surety and management for the case re-mention has been  set on July 14.

Prosecution of the case was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Nur Syafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.

Meanwhile, in two separate Magistrate’s Courts, no confession was recorded from the accused on three charges of disposing of stolen property, namely three units of tablets belonging to the state government.

According to the three charges, he was charged under Section 414 of the Penal Code for disposing of stolen property namely three units of tablets by selling them to three different people.

He committed the act at the same house on December 31, 2021, April 4 and May 19 this year.

The accused was later released on bail of RM5,000 with one local surety each in two cases in two separate Magistrate’s Courts.

Kuching Subordinate Court Assistant Registrar Sataia Kombi set June 30 as the re-mention for case management.

Prosecution of the case for both charges was handled by Prosecuting Officer ASP Rogayah Rosli while one charge was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Mohd Adzmei Ahmad.

It is understood that the complainant, an employee at the government premises in Jalan Simpang Tiga, found out that 11 units of tablets were missing and suspected stolen.

The estimated loss incurred is approximately RM7, 689, and a police report was lodged for further investigation which in turn led to the arrest of the accused.
