MIRI: The Chinese New Year Bazaar 2024 will be held from February 2 to 9, spanning eight days and seven nights at Jalan High Street, Jalan Raja and Jalan Kingsway here.

Those who like to book the stalls for business during the period can contact Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) starting from today (Oct 16).

MCCCI vice chairman Vincent Lu, who chaired the bazaar’s first meeting recently, said there will be a total of 300 stalls, similar to previous years, with 60 per cent of the stalls for Chinese traders and 40 per cent for Bumiputera traders.

“As usual, most of the Bumiputera stalls have been booked as the traders have been enthusiastically waiting for our announcement. We look forward to traders selling various local delicacies, merchandise and items related to Chinese New Year, making this a colourful bazaar which is also the iconic event of Miri,” he said, adding that there would be a slight increment in the stall rental.

There will also be various stage performances happening every night throughout the bazaar with the launching ceremony next February 3 which will be graced by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

The meeting, which was attended by representatives of collaborating partners namely Miri City Council (MCC), police, Public Works Department (JKR), Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), the People’s Volunteer Corps (RELA) and Borneo Parking System (BPS), also had discussions on the safety, cleanliness and all related issues to be taken care of during the bazaar.

“The cooperation from all partners is needed to ensure that the bazaar runs smoothly,” Lu added.

Meanwhile, he also mentioned that in preparation for the bazaar, a food handling course and typhoid vaccination session will take place in December, which is open to all traders who have booked stalls at the bazaar.

“It is a crucial step in ensuring food safety and cleanliness for food traders to avoid any unnecessary issue,” he added.
