Co-ops can help improve lot of the people

KUCHING: The government is committed to empowering the cooperative sector to improve the socioeconomic status of the community.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said cooperatives are on the right track for community developmentin Sarawak.

“Furthermore, it will realise the government’s target to improve the socioeconomic position of the community in an inclusive manner,” he said at the Transformasi Rantaian Tani Niaga: Peluang Koperasi seminar and dinner at a local hotel here, on Sunday (Dec 4).

His text of speech was read out by Deputy Minister of Food Industries, Commodities and Regional Development Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail.

Awang Tengah noted that since the cooperative moment hastotal assets of over RM140 billion with a total of 14,834 cooperatives and over seven million members, it is crucial for the movement to have close rapport and link betweenentrepreneurs and cooperatives.

“With the link, it will enable cooperatives to generate income through the process of sharing technology, expertise and resources. At the same time, cooperatives can also provide a market for their entrepreneurial members.

“Through the cooperation of cooperatives and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), it is possible for the target of the cooperative sector’s contribution to Malaysia’s gross domestic product (GDP) of RM100 billion by 2030 to be achieved,” he said.
