Contrabands worth over RM132k seized in raids

KAPIT: Custom enforcement officers seized contrabands worth approximately RM132,570 with unpaid duties and taxes valued at over RM512,900 in two raids conducted here on Dec 1.

State Customs director Herman Shah Abdullah said the first raid took place at a premise in Wisma Megah, Jalan Kapit by Pass around 10am.

Enforcement officers seized 16,880.76 litres of various brands of beer, 243 litres of liquor, 312,640 cigarettes and 21.40kg of fireworks.

“The seized contrabands are estimated to be worth RM119,470 and the total duties/taxes involved is about RM468,800,” he said.

Hours later, the enforcement officers conducted a second raid on a premises in Taman Ixora, Jalan Selirik where approximately 2,890 liters of beer worth RM13,100 with unpaid duties valued at RM44,107 were confiscated.

Herman said two men aged 48 and 50, were arrested in the raids. They were suspected of storing the contrabands in the premises to be sold to customers in Kapit area.

He called on the public to assist the department in the fight against smuggling, especially of cigarettes, liquor, fireworks and drugs.

“Smuggling not only harms the country in terms of losing revenue, but it also poses a threat to national security and the wellbeing of the people,” he said.
