SIMUNJAN: Police are looking for a masked man who allegedly robbed a convenience store in town on Monday (June 12).

The incident, which was caught on the store’s closed-circuit television (CCTV), had gone viral on social media.

In the 25-second video clip, the masked suspect is seen armed with a long object and demanding the cashier to empty out the cash register before fleeing the scene.

Simunjan police chief DSP Wong Tee Kue said they received a report on the incident around 7.30 pm.

He said the estimated losses incurred by the store was about RM150.

“We are looking for the suspect in his late 30s, who goes by his alias ‘Zico’.

“Our men recently raided his house but he was nowhere to be found. He is believed to be on the run,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.

Wong said the suspect, who had several previous records, is suspected to be a drug abuser and is desperate for money.

Armed robbery is a criminal offence under Section 392/397 of the Penal Code and if convicted, it carries a jail term of up to 14 years and whipping.
