KUCHING: Kuching City South Council (MBKS) will be embarking on a project to recycle used PVC banners into tote bags.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said this was one of the council’s green initiatives. “With that, we will also be working together with the Sarawak Women and Family Department to encourage single mothers to take up bag making and designing.”

Apart from that, he added that MBKS would also continue to have a diverse theme of environmental-related poster competitions.

“Also, we are making some improvements on the Buy Back Recycling Programme. The processes will be transitioned and integrated into an existing app as one of the convenient features.

“Hopefully we will see the final product by this year,” he said during the launch of the Earth Day programme at MBKS here on Friday (April 22).

He explained that under the Sarawak Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, environmental sustainability was one of the seven strategic components to accelerate economic growth.

“This is something MBKS has committed to over many years, a vision shared between the Sarawak government and the international community.

“MBKS over the years has always had its own green initiatives, from composting, rainwater harvesting to recycling e-waste and MBKS Buy Back programmes, just to name a few.”

Earlier, Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian officiated at the launch of the programme.
