Culinary initiative with Taiwan to boost tourism

MARUDI: A promotional initiative called ‘Taiwanese Cuisine and Sarawak Ethnic Culinary Demonstration’ has been launched to enhance economic activity and tourism in the district.

Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil said the programme was the first to be held in district and the second in Sarawak.

He said this initiative was the result of a joint effort by the Sarawak Indu Dayak Serakup Association Marudi Branch (SIDS), Sarawak Lenyah Association (PKS), Sarawak Chinese Traders Association Baram, Persatuan Rukun Tetangga and Doh Kayan Telang Usan Association.

“Thank you to the associations involved for promoting Marudi District to the outside community.

“This kind of programme will be able to open a new chapter in the effort to introduce the district not only in Sarawak or Malaysia but also internationally,” he said at the launching at the Marudi Auditorium here, recently.

Dr Penguang emphasised that one of the main aspects of the programme is the demonstration of cuisine from various ethnic groups, not only from Marudi but from Taiwan itself.

In addition, the programme provides an opportunity for local residents to learn about the culture and cuisine of Taiwan.

In the event, Dr Penguang who is Marudi assemblyman also presented Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants to the Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) and organisations namely JKKK Rumah Asi Sg Arang, Hakka Community Association, JKKK Rh Giling Sg Buloh , JKKK Rumah James Ansi Kpg Sg Buloh A, JKKK Rumah Jelaping Sg Arang and JKKK Rumah Nyegang Sg Temiang Bakong with each receiving RM10,000. The Jawatankuasa Tetap Aktiviti Islam Daerah Marudi received RM5,000.
