KUCHING: The Sibu and Bintulu Divisional Disaster Management Committees (DDMCs) are empowered to decide on schools reopening or closure in their respective localities.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) chairman Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said the divisional committees could come up with a recommendation if they find that the school reopening would pose a risk to the community’s health.

“We have given the power to Sibu and Bintulu DDMCs to discuss with the Divisional Education Officer and the Divisional Health Officer [on the decision for school reopening].

“We do hope that they would make a risk assessment on the matter and if they find that the school reopening poses a health risk, then they will make a recommendation to the relevant department.

“We (Sarawak) have taken this approach all this while,” he said in a daily Covid-19 press conference today (April 15).

When asked on the issue of attempted fraud by an individual to offer services concerning the ‘EnterSarawak’ application form, Uggah stressed that the committee did not appoint any agent to assist anybody to fill the form.

“We have lodged a report and the police are investigating the matter.

“I believe the police will make an announcement on their investigation in the near future,” he said.

He urged members of the public to contact SDMC Secretariat through proper channel upon facing any difficulty and not rely on third party claiming to be an agent.

“Please be careful. There will always be people who will try to take advantage on any issues or problems so make sure you don’t fall into the trap,” he advised.
