KUCHING: The Department of Drainage and Irrigation (DID) is taking steps to address the impact of climate change in the state.

Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said the department will modify and adapt climate change strategies from Amsterdam and Copenhagen.

“Every Sarawakian must learn that climate change is here in Sarawak and not just happening in Europe, China, United States, New Zealand and Australia.

“I was told that we had a 19 per cent increase in rainfall this year despite the fact that we should be at the beginning of the dry season now.

“Therefore, the local experts will look into the matter and the (climate change mitigation and adaptation) will start with MJC/Pine Square in Batu Kawah,” he said in a Facebook post.

Dr Sim, who is also Batu Kawah assemblyman said he will fight for RM100 million under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) mid term review in addition to the RM140 million allocated under 12MP for flood mitigation and drainage upgrade in Batu Kawah.

“This is in view of the extra volume of rainwater and cost increase in materials since Covid-19,” he pointed out.

The Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister then said every one must play a role and do their part in the fight against climate change.
