Dr Chan’s mother passes away aged 103

MIRI: The mother of former Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Patinggi Dr George Chan Hong Nam has passed away at her home here.

Leong Lai Wah was 103 years old when she breathed her last at 3pm today.

According to a close friend, Dr Chan was in Kuching when he was informed of his mother’s passing and he returned home later in the night.

Dr Chan, 83, is the eldest child from four siblings.

When contacted, Dr Chan said the funeral will be held at on 1pm on Thursday (May 9).

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting extended his condolences on behalf of the party.

“She was a warm-hearted person,” Ting said when contacted late today by New Sarawak Tribune.

“She was my neighbour and my children were very fond of her, as they frequently went to her house…she was like their grandmother.”

Dr Chan takes his mother to fulfill her duty and cast her vote in her constituency at the SJK Chung Hua Miri polling station in the last state election in 2016.
