Drug addict gets 18 months’ imprisonment for strangling wife, substance abuse

KUCHING: The Magistrates’ Court here sentenced a 21-year-old drug addict to 18 months’ imprisonment for strangling his wife and substance abuse.

Cameron Nyipa Raphael Robert pleade guilty before magistrate Nursyaheeqa Nazwa Radzali to a charge framed under Section 323 of the Penal Code read together with Section 326A of the same Code.

If convicted, the accused can be sentenced to a jail term of up to one year or a fine of up to RM2,000 or both.

The accused was charged for intentionally injuring the 20-year-old victim at their residence in Jalan Batu Kawa around 12pm on Dec 9.

According to the facts of the case, the victim was suddenly strangled by the accused because she was unhappy with him.

Fearing for her safety, she lodged a police report that led to the arrest of the accused on the same day.

Meanwhile, in the same court, the accused was sentenced to eight months’ imprisonment after testing positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

The accused committed the offence at the Padawan Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division (NCID) office around 10.35am on Oct 3.

He was charged under Section 15 (1) (a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15 of the same Act, which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or a two-year jail term, if convicted.

Inspector Merylene Lindan Andrew Mang prosecuted while the accused was unrepresented.
