Drug offender gets five years’ jail, caning

KUCHING: A local man was sentenced to five years in prison and two strokes of caning by the Sessions Court yesterday for repeatedly being involved in drug activities.

Accused Hafiz, 29, pleaded guilty to one charge before Judge Musli Abdul Hamid.

According to the charge, he has two prior offences under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 in 2021.

This time, he was charged with taking amphetamine and methamphetamine and tested positive for drugs while being detained at Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN) IPD Kuching, at about 3.10 pm on Dec 7 last year.

Prosecution of the cases is under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act.

The judge ordered the accused to serve his prison sentence with effect from yesterday in addition to allowing him to serve his prison time at Sri Aman Prison.

The court also ordered him to be placed under police supervision for two years after serving his prison sentence.

According to the facts of the case, the police have arrested a local man who is believed to be involved in repeated drug abuse activities.

The results of the preliminary screening test of the accused’s urine were found to be positive for drugs.

The result of the accused’s urine sample report from the Pathology Department of Sarawak General Hospital confirmed that the accused was positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.

The prosecution of the case was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor Iezzah Iburdanisha Ibrahim while the accused was not represented by a counsel.
