KUCHING: The 15th General Election is expected to be held after the memorandum of understanding between the Perikatan Nasional (PN) government and Pakatan Harapan (PH) ends on July 31.

Universiti Malaya socio-political analyst Associate Prof. Dr Awang Azman Awang Pawi said since the Umno supreme council has decided not to extend or renew the MoU, the party wants the general election to be held earlier.

“Meanwhile, this is the chance for Barisan Nasional (BN) to shine in the election as we can observe, currently PH and the opposition are not united.

“But, if the GE is still being delayed, it will be harder for BN to win,” he said when contacted by New Sarawak Tribune on today (June 5).
Awang Azman who is also the research fellow at Universiti Malaya’s Centre for Democracy and Elections (UMcedel), said it is worried the current economic situation will get worse if parliament is not dissolved.

“Our Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri stated that he will ensure that he serves at least a year as PM before dissolving parliament.
“The dominant party will decide whether the GE is held before the budget presentation,” he said.
