MUKAH: The Malaysian Fisheries Department Sarawak plans to introduce the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) in its effort to help prevent overfishing.

The department said the EAFM would plan, develop and manage fisheries sources without jeopardising marine ecosystem, hence benefitting the future generations.

The components of EAFM are human wellbeing, good governance and ecology wellbeing, it said in a briefing note during an engagement programme with the fisheries community here on Thursday.

It added the purpose of EAFM was to find a balance between conservation and sustainable usage of fisheries source and other natural sources.

The department said EAFM would help reduce conflict between sectors and users of ecosystem while enhancing support from all parties towards good governance.

According to marine scientists, overfishing could kill the oceans by 2048, thus depriving humans of seafood.

“Stop overfishing or we will run out of seafood in 2048,” the department said in a
statement.

Sarawak Fisheries director Bohari Leng officiated at the closing of the two-day programme which was attended by more than 50 local fishermen.
