MUKAH: Various efforts are being made to uphold the Kaul ceremony so that the tradition is not forgotten amidst modernisation.

In stating this, Deputy Minister of Economy cum Mukah MP Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib said one of the efforts implemented was to maintain the event at the village level.

According to her, the effort aims to give opportunities to the younger generation to participate in this traditional celebration.

“We hope that the efforts made by various parties today can be used by the public so that the history of the Melanau community is not forgotten.

“Kaul is also one of the attractions for tourists from all over the world where this festival is also used as a platform for small traders to introduce their local products.

“A ceremony like this cannot be seen as an unimportant ceremony in maintaining customs and culture. We must work together to make it a success so that it remains and becomes an annual tradition that all communities can enjoy,” she said as reported by Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS).

She said this while attending the Kaul Petanak ceremony in Kuala Petanak, Mukah on yesterday (Feb 26).

Following this, she hopes that such programmes and traditions can benefit all the village communities because Kaul has been considered the largest platform to unify the Melanau community.

For the record, the Kaul Mukah Festival will be held from April 26 to May 1 this year and will be held at villages in Mukah.
