SIBU: An engineer in his 30s found himself RM29,314 poorer after falling victim to an online job scam that lured him with promises of quick profits.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili disclosed in a statement on Monday (Feb 19) that the incident unfolded on Feb 15 when the victim came across an advertisement on TikTok offering part-time work.

Intrigued by the opportunity, the engineer contacted the provided number, connecting with a person identifying as Kathy.

She claimed that a mere 30-minute task could yield commissions ranging from 15 to 20 per cent.

Upon expressing interest, the victim was added to a Telegram group. Subsequently, he was instructed to make a capital deposit to qualify for the work.

“The victim made three bank transfers totalling RM29,300 to an account number provided by the suspect between Feb 15 and 18,” ACP Zulkipli stated.

Despite the transfers, the promised commission failed to materialise, prompting the victim to file a police report.

“The case is under investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating,” ACP Zulkipli confirmed.

In response to this incident, the public are urged to exercise caution and scepticism when encountering enticing job offers on social media platforms.

“They are advised to thoroughly investigate and verify the background of companies or agencies before committing to any job offers,” ACP Zulkipli advised.
