KUCHING: The Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) welcomes any improvement to the examination system, but views that all parties must be given time to understand the changes before implementation.

Its president Adam Prakash Abdullah said STU took note of the remarks by Malaysian Examination Board (LPM) director Datuk Pkharuddin Ghazali in a Malay-language daily on Feb 7 which quoted him as saying discussions at the board and ministry level were being made in an effort to ensure the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) system is in line with the development of the present time.

“STU welcomes any improvement to the examination system which leads to the transformation of the system and certification such as SPM, which is over 50 years old.

“However, we hope that any amendment to the system, time should be given to all parties involved such as students, teachers and parents to understand the system before it is implemented later.”

He said such an amendment would take time to implement and when implemented later, would not raise any doubt from any party.

“The SPM certification is related to recognition at the international level and any changes need to be done orderly, carefully taking into account the recognition of our certificate (SPM) at international level.”

Adam added that STU supported any improvement to the education system in order to maintain the quality of education that meets international standards.

On Feb 8, LPM however clarified that the changes in the format of the SPM examination in future was not true and the board never made any confirmation on the matter.

The board mentioned, if there were any changes to the format of SPM examination and assessment system, it would inform the public officially.
