Ethnic NGOs to host Sarawak Cultural Arts Festival

MIRI: A total of 17 ethnic group associations in Miri division are to host the Sarawak Cultural Arts Festival slated to be held from Dec 10 to 11 this year.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang said that the two-day event would be held at Miri Civic Centre featuring the cultures of the various local ethnic groups in Sarawak besides fostering interest in engaging in traditional art activities and exposing the younger generation with the opportunity to experience for themselves the cultural dances of other races.

“We hope this event can help to promote and preserve traditional culture from various races, especially ethnic groups, for future generations; to create a harmonious environment and strengthen relationships of various ethnic groups,” he said during a press conference held on Sunday.

The event main organisers are Sarawak Chinese Association, Federation of Orang Ulu Associations of Sarawak, Malaysia (Forum), Miri Indian Association, Miri Sikh Association, Dayak Association Miri (DAM), Miri Melanau Association, Miri Malay Association, Miri Kedayan Association and Miri Dayak Bidayuh National Association.

While co-organisers consist of Sarawak Kenyah National Association, Sarawak Kayan Association, Sarawak Bisaya Association, Sarawak Rurum Kelabit Association, Sarawak Berawan Association, Sarawak Lun Bawang Association, Sarawak Lakiput Association, Sarawak Tioun Penan Association and Sarawak Saban Association.

Apart from that, a workshop on the cultural dances of various ethnic groups in Sarawak will also be held on Dec 11 from 9am to 2.30pm.

The workshop session is open to secondary and primary students.
