SIBU: The federal government needs to explain why funds for Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) have been slashed in 2020 budget.

“Though Sarawak appears to be receiving a bigger allocation of development expenditure, Unimas will only receive a grant amounting to RM17,469,900 in 2020,” said Dudong SUPP chairman Wong Ching Yong at a talk in Bukit Lima here, Sunday night.

“Compared to 2019 whereby it received RM42,275,000, the reduction of RM24,805,100 represents a 58 per cent decrease in fund allocation.”

Wong said Universiti Malaysia Sabah would receive RM43,000,000 next year, and compared to the RM28,000,000 in 2019, the additional allocation represented a 153 per cent increase.

“Unimas is the only public university in Sarawak and is ranked No 236 in the QS Asian University Rankings. The total enrollment is about 18,000,” Wong explained.
