KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has refuted claims of attempts to topple the unity government.

He said as far as Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is concerned, it stands firm in backing the present federal government.

“The GPS stand, as mentioned many times by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and myself, is that we want a stable and strong government.

“This means a government that focuses on the wellbeing of the people and of course the wealth of the country. Only through this can Malaysia be back on track in its economic recovery. And if we keep on politicking, we will again be far behind than the other Asean countries,” he said told a press conference at his Hari Raya open house at the CIDB Convention Centre here today.

Fadillah, who is also the GPS chief whip, was asked on the ruling Sarawak coalition’s stand following a report by The Vibes news portal of fresh moves to unseat Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

To a question on GPS’ next move, he said: “There is no move. I don’t know if there is any move at the moment.

“That is why I do not want to comment on something that is unreliable. Why do I have to comment on something that is unreliable?

“I have not been approached, nobody approached us. As I know we, GPS, is focusing on making sure Malaysia will go back to its glory days. Economic recovery is our focus,” he said.

On Monday (Apr 24), the news portal reported that Barisan Nasional (BN) MPs are currently being persuaded by certain key individuals to be involved in a “do-or-die mission” to quit their party and their seats and later re-contest under the opposition banner in by-elections.
