KUCHING: A concerned public recently informed Hope Place of a family which has fallen into tragic circumstances, living in Siburan.

Hope Place in its press statement here yesterday disclosed that Lai Nyong Hoi, 66, currently, lives with his wife and three children, whereby their youngest child is disabled since birth.

“The family’s woes worsen when in January this year, Lai was diagnosed with very low blood cells. This condition has made him so weak that he is unable to walk or even stand up for long.

“It is still unsure why Lai suddenly got this illness, as he was quite healthy before. Now he uses a walking cane to move about, assisted by his wife,” the NGO added.

Lai, who used to plant and sell vegetables, is unable to work now. He has already applied for financial aid from the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and is waiting for their approval.

Recently Lai fell down and fractured his bones and because of this unfortunate incident, his wife is more anxious and keeps a closer watch on her husband.

Lai’s youngest child, Emily, 6, has physical disability and ever since she was a toddler, uses a wheelchair because of her deformed leg.

In 2020, Emily undergone a knee surgery and is now able to walk. Upon first time meeting Emily, Hope Place was saddened by how thin Emily was.

However, her smiles and chattiness had melted everyone’s hearts. She is receiving RM150 from JKM monthly.

Lai’s eldest son, 19, Ah Fung is the sole bread winner now for the family.

Currently, he works in a sundry shop, peeling beansprouts and at night, works at a mobile shop. Even with two jobs, it seems money is never enough, especially with daily expenses getting higher.

Hope Place is supporting the family with basic food aid and is also giving little Emily children’s milk powder.
