KUCHING: A 72-year-old miraculously escaped with minor injuries as the car he was in went plunging into a ravine. Three of his family members in the vehicle were also hurt.

The accident occurred along Kampung Siluk, Jalan Lundu/Bau at 2am on Saturday. The victim who was travelling from Kuching to Sematan was driving a Toyota Avanza.

The victim and his family members were in Kuching to see a Buddhist procession which ended late on Friday night. They only managed to get back early in the morning the next day.

According to friends of the family, the area was dark and there were some road repairs and upgrading works going on. The road is under the Pan Borneo Highway project.

State Head of Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Superintendent Alexson Naga Chabu said initial investigation showed that the lack of road diversion signage caused the victim to drive straight into the ravine instead of making a turn.
