Fatimah says state will support new centre for abused kids

KUCHING: The Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Ministry will support the proposed special institution by the federal Ministry of Women, Community Development.

Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said her ministry will wait for further details on the propose institution.

“We also understand that the institution will be specifically for children, which means other groups will not be placed in the institution.

“We will wait for the details first, and we will support it and provide our input as well,” she told reporters after visiting the Soup Kitchen Society for Kuching Urban Poor (SKUP) at the Community Social Support Centre (CSSC) here today (Jan 11).

Meanwhile, she said Sarawak also provides several services for abuse cases among the children.

“They can absolutely visit us here for research purposes and we will assist them in anyway we could.

“We also have a few non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that handle domestic violence cases among children and women,” she added.

Earlier, Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the Cabinet has agreed in principle to establish a special department or institution for children to look after the welfare and interests of children.

She said although there are a children’s division under the Social Welfare Department, there is always room for improvement.
